Introduction to Westplan

Westplan is a revolutionary software package which simplifies the complicated design process involved in creating effective voice networks that are based on either traditional circuit switching or Voice over IP. All calculations are based on an inter-nodal traffic model which you can specify yourself, or allow Westplan to estimate.

By allowing you to try different network topologies, Westplan quickly helps you to make informed judgements on the suitability of particular voice networking strategies to your company. You will be in a stronger position to understand your voice network costs and therefore to control your network resources.

Westplan supports these features:

Point and click network diagrams
Voice over IP bandwidth calculations
Layer 2 support for PPP, Frame Relay, Ethernet, ATM and HDLC
Analogue, T1 and E1 transmission facilities
User-definable routing rules
RTP compression for VoIP
Full justification reports for each analysis
Clear printed reports
Context sensitive help

Who is Westplan for?

Westplan has been successfully deployed by designers of both telco networks and private voice networks. The intuitive graphical interface which Westplan boasts appeals to both the seasoned network designer and to those who are new to network design. Westplan can also provide a good introduction to the skills required in designing networks.

In addition to supporting traditional circuit switched technologies, Westplan supports the design of voice networks which use IP as their transmission medium, either through a privately managed IP network or the public Internet.  For this reason, Westplan is also generating particular interest with those involved in design tasks involving network convergence.

Tasks with which Westplan can assist include the design of global voice networks, smaller scale enterprise networks and voice mail connections.  Its wide range of applications makes Westplan an effective tool for network design engineers, communications managers and pre-sales teams.

How does Westplan work?

Westplan's work is organised into projects which contain collections of the network nodes that you define.  Each project can hold an unlimited number of networks.  Each network defines a way of inter-connecting its project's nodes.  By defining new networks using simple 'point and click' techniques, you can investigate the relative merits of different network layouts.  The inter-nodal links can be either analogue trunks, T1 trunks, E1 trunks or Voice over IP links using PPP, Ethernet, Frame Relay, ATM or HDLC.

Using an integrated spreadsheet table, you can define the inter-nodal traffic levels in either Erlangs of busy hour traffic or minutes of daily traffic.  You can also define the way in which calls are routed through the network if the default routing Westplan assumes (based on least hops) is not appropriate.

Networks can then be optimised.  During the optimisation process, Westplan calculates the traffic levels offered to each link, and recommends the facilities that should be deployed on each link for the quality of service to remain within the constraints that you can specify.

Full justification of each analysis is provided in the form of printable reports.   This is particularly useful when interpreting the complicated calculations Westplan performs for Voice over IP bandwidth dimensioning.
